Marcy M. is a certified Orton-Gillingham specialist with over 15 years of teaching experience. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Sociology from Wake Forest University, and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte. She began her career as a special education teacher in 2011 and quickly found helping struggling readers build strong literacy skills to be her passion. After completing training in the Orton-Gillingham approach in 2014, Marcy developed a deep commitment to structured literacy and the science of reading. From 2019-2021, she furthered her education by earning Orton-Gillingham Specialist Certification through the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). In her years working as a reading specialist for students with dyslexia, she has seen firsthand that an explicit, systematic and multisensory instructional approach is essential for helping readers build the phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and spelling skills needed for literacy success. Marcy effectively builds relationships with students and cultivates a supportive learning environment that helps discouraged learners become increasingly comfortable being challenged and taking risks. She also believes in making learning as fun and engaging as possible. Outside of teaching, Marcy enjoys traveling, hiking, playing volleyball, and spending time with her family.
