Sakinah M.

Sakinah has ten years of teaching experience, and has specialized in literacy instruction since 2019. She has taught Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 3rd grade, and currently serves as a Reading Interventionist with New York City Public Schools. She is trained in several Orton-Gillingham-based programs, including SPIRE, Sounds Sensible, Wilson Fundations, the Wilson Reading System, and the PAF Reading Program. Prior to becoming a Reading Interventionist, she had the privilege of working at South Bronx Literacy Academy, the first free public school in New York City dedicated to students with dyslexia and language-based learning differences. That experience deepened her commitment to structured literacy and individualized instruction. In her current role, she provides small-group, structured literacy instruction using Orton-Gillingham–based programs to explicitly teach foundational phonics skills. This work allows her to meet students exactly where they are while delivering systematic, explicit instruction that strengthens decoding, fluency, and overall reading confidence. She is passionate about helping students build confidence, independence, and a strong foundation in reading. She believes effective literacy instruction is explicit, responsive, and grounded in a deep understanding of each learner’s strengths and needs.
